Do I need to be a surveyor to use it?
No. If you can use a phone app, you can stake a point. Every receiver we ship is on the latest firmware, we will install and test the SIM on request, and our YouTube channel has setup videos. When you get stuck, call us at (901) 444-0804.
One line to know: layout for your own work is yours to do, but property lines and legal boundaries still need a licensed surveyor.
Does it replace my laser level?
It does a different job. A laser is still the quickest way to set a whole slab to one elevation. The RS4 tells you where things go and how far you are off grade, anywhere on the site, without a line of sight to a tripod. Many crews carry both.
Is this machine control for my excavator or dozer?
No. The RS4 and RS4 Pro are rovers you carry on a pole. They are for layout, grade checks, as-builts and topo, not for guiding a blade or a bucket.
Do I need a base, or can I use an RTK network?
For the best accuracy, we recommend your own base on site. A base also keeps working where there is no cell coverage, because it talks to the rover over the built-in LoRa radio.
Many users run a single rover on an RTK network instead: your state's network (it varies by state), Point One Navigation (we offer this), Emlid RTK corrections (1 year free with every receiver), and others. Corrections come over the internet, either from your phone or tablet's data or from a SIM card in the receiver. Every RS4 and RS4 Pro from us includes a free 1-year, 24 GB data SIM for exactly this.
Can I stake out from my plans?
Yes. Emlid Flow imports DXF files with points, lines and polygons, and design surfaces for grade checks. CAD drawings and surface stakeout need Emlid Flow Pro, which comes for a year in our RS4 Pro + RS4 bundle with Flow Pro. MicroSurvey FieldGenius does it too, with a perpetual license.
What comes free when I buy from 3D Mapping Tools?
A rubber protection bumper and a 1-year, 24 GB data-only SIM, with every RS4 and RS4 Pro. Ask at checkout and we will install and test the SIM in your base. Emlid also includes 1 year of RTK corrections.
